Following the release of a controversial video featuring “Squad” member Representative Ilhan Omar advising her fellow Somalians on strategies to potentially evade deportation, first-term Republican Congressman Brandon Gill from Texas, who is also the son-in-law of Dinesh D’Souza, publicly criticized Rep. Omar. He asserted that it would be in America’s best interest if she were deported to her native Somalia.
This incident arose amid President Donald Trump’s deportation initiative, spearheaded by Border Czar Tom Homan. During the video, Rep. Omar conveyed to her audience, in response to a reporter’s inquiry, that immigrants are not required to share critical immigration information with law enforcement officials.
She emphasized that the only necessary statement is a specific phrase regarding legal counsel. In her remarks, she stated, “If ICE attempts to question you, you are not obligated to answer their questions. Just state that you are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions.”
Furthermore, she highlighted that certain details, often perceived as obligatory to disclose, are not, saying, “Disclosure of your name, immigration status, and the mode of entry is not mandatory. Learn the laws and prepare yourself and refrain from disclosing information that you prefer them not to know.”
